The History of Our Patterns

The signature element of Yuliya Kutovaya Jewelry is its intricate patterns. The story of our filigree jewelry began in 1990, when jeweler Mikhail Kutovoy started creating melchior (nickel silver) jewelry using the forging and filigree technique.

During her studies, Yuliya Kutovaya skillfully applied classic patterns of Uzbekistan and Dagestan in ceramic painting.

In 2011, the art of filigree detailing reached a new level with the acquisition of high-precision equipment. Mastering new techniques unlocked endless technical and creative possibilities.

In 2020, Yuliya won the Grand Prix of the Swarovski Gemstones Design Competition for a jewelry piece inspired by Uzbek national style. This was a modern interpretation of the Bukhara wedding earrings “Shibirma”. Additionally, the "Turkestan" transformable jewelry piece was awarded at the Junwex-2020 competition in Moscow.

Following these achievements, the brand made a strategic decision to develop demi-couture jewelry collections featuring national motifs of Uzbekistan.

A Brief History of Bukhara “Shibirma” Earrings

The large "Shibirma" earrings were traditionally crafted in yellow gold or gilded silver, featuring red Verneuil corundum at the center, surrounded by small freshwater pearls with hanging pearl pendants below. The central stone was typically oval or pear-shaped, and the earrings were made using the filigree technique. The clasp type was French hook. These earrings first emerged in the early 20th century. In Uzbekistan, such earrings were gifted to brides before their wedding as a traditional wedding accessory.

Today, “Shibirma” earrings come in various shapes and designs, featuring different gemstones while still being crafted using the same filigree technique by artisans in Bukhara and other cities of Uzbekistan.
